What Happens During a Root Canal?

Although the idea of a root canal may cause you to become nervous, our team can assure you that there is nothing to worry about. While this method of treatment has a negative reputation because of misinformation and countless myths, it remains one of the safest and most effective ways to remove a serious infection as well as the pain from inside a tooth.

Our team will begin by administering local anesthesia so that you don’t feel anything during your procedure. If you need sedation to help calm your nerves, we can provide that as well. After making a small opening in the crown of your tooth, we will use special instruments to clean its chambers and canals as well as remove the infected or damaged pulp. We’ll then sanitize the inner layer before filling it with gutta-percha, a biocompatible material that replaces the pulp and helps the tooth retain its shape.

As we finish up, we’ll seal the tooth so that bacteria do not reenter before placing a temporary dental crown over the vulnerable area. A finalized restoration will be crafted in the meantime, and you will come back to our office to have it put in place when it’s ready.
