The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Process
Undergoing wisdom tooth extraction doesn’t have to be a scary or unnerving experience. Instead, our dentists perform these procedures regularly and can ensure a smooth and streamlined process. Whether it is your teenager who needs more space inside their mouth, or you are dealing with increasing discomfort toward the back of your mouth, we can help.
After administering local anesthesia (and sedation if necessary), we will begin the process. If a simple procedure is all that is needed, we will use a dental elevator to lift the tooth from its socket. This is most commonly performed on wisdom teeth that have partially erupted. Once it is elevated, we will grasp it with dental forceps before moving it back and forth. This will continue until it detaches.
For wisdom teeth that are impacted (beneath the gumline), we will need to perform a more surgical procedure. After opening the gums, we will expose the underlying tooth and begin to remove it in sections. We find this technique reduces the chances of removing more bone than is necessary. Once the tooth is removed, the gum tissue is closed so that healing and recovery can begin.
